I recently read Brad R. Torgersen’s ‘The Chaplain’s Assistant’ in the most recent issue of Analog Science Fiction and Fact (Sept. 2011) and wanted to read more from this writer so I picked up his award winning ‘Outbound’. I was glad that I did.

Outbound is a tale of Miroslaw (Mirek) Jaworski and his forced trip to the Kuiper Belt after war had torn apart humanities settlements on Earth and throughout the solar system. He is in search of the Outbound, humans that had left the inner solar system sometime before, who might be mankind’s last known surviving colony. As Mirek makes this arduous trip to the far flung reaches of known space, we witness his inner journey as he comes to terms with all that he lost and left behind and his struggles to cling to the tenacity that first drove him forward.

Torgersen weaves a captivating story that sunk its hooks into me early and had me finishing it in one sitting. The character of Mirek was deep and identifiable, the prose was tight, and it left me hungering for me. It is an emotionally satisfying tale, and I recommend it.

It’s very easy to see why this story won the Analog reader’s award in 2010. From a straightforward premise, this story unfolds with great emotional power. With an immediately sympathetic protagonist (that, at the same time, is a real and complex character), this story is involving and perfectly plotted. While the premise and the world building are fairly standard, the emotional complexity and characterization make this a very satisfying story.

I read and enjoyed one of this author’s stories in an SF magazine and looked for more of his work. Wow, was I glad I did. This was a very well written story that keeps your interest from the very first page. Just an excellent short story. If you enjoy science fiction and good writing, do yourself a favor and read this. Well worth the time and price.
