Travelling Reviews

2012 album from the enormously popular Swedish duo. While zigzagging between airports, arenas, hotels and meeting with fans from all over the world, the band also has found time to record the album Travelling. The idea has been to tap into all the positive energy that has boosted the band during this dazzling trip, and channel it to new Roxette music. In short, an album that just like 1992's Tourism captures the feeling of a band on a roll-constantly on the move, snatching inspiration as the

Recording during Roxette’s world tour (still going on as of this writing), Travelling is a sequel of sorts to Tourism, in which live songs and new recordings are mixed together to give a picture of a band on the move, both creating and performing. This is a more focused album than Tourism, though. The new songs are mostly in the second half of the album, so this has a bit of an EP feel with bonus live tracks. That’s not entirely accurate, however, as the album holds together extremely well as a full album. It’s not just a mishmash: it’s a fully realized statement. And that statement is, without a doubt, that Roxette still has it. Travelling finds the band reunited, rejuvenated, and sounding as good as they ever have.
The single is of course “It’s Possible,” which appears again at the end of the album in a second version. Both versions are great. The first is a perfect little pop gem; the second is warmer but no less memorable.
Two other standout songs are “Easy Way Out” and “Touched by the Hand of God.” “Touched” was meant to appear on the Charm School album, but the band did not feel they had recorded it to their satisfaction. It was worth holding back, because this version is incredible, and it fits on Travelling better, I think, than it would have on the previous album.
Elsewhere on the album, there are classic Roxette hits, a Per Gessle solo song (Perfect Excuse) re-recorded with Marie taking the lead vocals, and other fantastic new songs. Roxette is a great singles band, but few give them credit for making the excellent albums they have. In addition to their best, like Joyride, let’s not forget about Per Gessle’s amazing solo albums like Mazarin, Son of a Plumber, and Party Crasher. Travelling definitely makes the list as top-tier Roxette. It’s wonderful to hear Per and Marie, clearly great friends, along with Helena Josefsson and the rest of the band, make such beautiful music together.
